Are you too old to DJ?

…No!!

In general, it’s never too late to DJ as long as you have a will to do so.

Especially if you are doing it as a hobby. It’s never too late to purchase some home DJ equipment and practice mixing for your own enjoyment, or for family and friend gatherings.

Now, if you want to take it out of the bedroom and into bigger arenas; DJ’ing can then become a bit more strenuous.  If you’re ready for late nights, long nights, early mornings, traveling, equipment management, music management, business management, and so on and so forth, then have at it. The pace of the DJ lifestyle may not work for those who are trying to slow down in life.

Are you a night owl?

Many parties and events run late.

Also, take into consideration the demographic you’ll be playing to.  Most night clubs fill up after 10 pm with people looking for mainstream, hip, new music. Is that something you want to keep up with?  Or will you be creating events that cater more to those that will appreciate the style of music you play.

I personally know working DJ’s who are in there 50’s.  I knew a guy that picked up DJ’ing in his mid 40’s, and he throws events all the time. If you can handle the workload then don’t let age be a factor.

I decided to pick up DJ’ing when I was 26 years old.  At that time, I thought I was too old to DJ. I would see so many interviews with DJ’s saying they started DJ’ing basically fresh out of their mother’s womb.  They usually had older siblings or parents or family members who were DJ’s; so it was basically engrained in their DNA. I had none of that; just the desire and interest to DJ.

Now I look back at how ridiculous it was for me to think I was too old.

The fear of what others may think can really hold up your dreams in life.

Don’t let that happen.

I was afraid my peers who only knew me as the front desk assistant at work, would laugh at me when I told them that “I am now a DJ.” Luckily, they never did that; they actually started supporting me; especially the day I quit that job to go on tour as a DJ.

Once you know for sure that this is the profession you want to do, then you must claim it.  Say out loud, “I am a DJ!” and Be proud of that.

So, go get to it.  Stop trying to find validation and do what feels right to you.

Fine wine gets better with time.
