If you know me, then you know that I love Afrohouse music, Afro-pop and Caribbean style music like Dancehall and Soca. These are the main genres I play at clubs. I love Afro-Diasporic music because compared to any other music genres, these genres ignite the areas in my brain that make me get up and dance the most. Over the summer I came across some really good Afro-Pop songs that I will definitely be including in my upcoming DJ sets.
By the way, this list is in no order of importance; so don’t think my number 1 pick is my favorite song, because honestly they are all my favorites at the moment. Take a listen to these tracks I have selected and tell me what you think. What were your favorite Afro-Pop songs of the summer? Let me know in the comments. If you like these songs then add them to your own personal playlists and Enjoy!
Track #1 :
“Possible” by Waconzy
At the beginning of my Afro-pop journey around 2013, Waconzy was one of the first artists I played in my DJ sets. “Celebrate” was the song to be exact. So it was really nice when I received an email asking me to help promote his new music. I had a moment of nostalgia, but of course I was happy to promote his new music. This track was 1 of 3 tracks that was recently sent my way. Also check out his new track “Enjoy.”
Track #2 :
“Bogada” by A-STAR
Track #3 :
“Hypeman” by A-STAR
Track #4 :
“Solege” by A-STAR
Wow! A-STAR has had a really big year this year. I absolutely love most of the music he has been releasing; hints why I have 3 songs here instead of just 1. It’s too hard to pick. Matter fact I made a dance video to 2 of these songs. Check out that dance video here. These songs will no-doubt make you want to dance. Comment below which A-STAR track is your favorite?
Track #5 :
“Bounce” by Yemi Alade
Yemi, is another artist I have been playing since the beginning of my Afrobeats journey. She never disappoints. Back in the day my DJ cohorts and I would play her track “Johnny” at the height of our parties because everyone loved that track on the dance floor.
“Bounce” is another upbeat track that will make you want to dance, or bounce, just like the title says. What’s your favorite Yemi track?
Track #6 :
“Nuh Let Go” by Maleek Berry
This track is smooth, sexy, and groovy. It’s also, not newly released. Its been out since 2016, but I’m just now adding it to my playlists. If you haven’t heard this until now, then just thank me later.
It gives you the feeling of being loved, and even loving on your own self. It makes me think of floating on air. I’ve seen some really nice dance routines done to this track on Instagram. Maleek Berry often comes with the good vibes. Add this one to your cool-down routines.
Track #7 :
“Gato Pato” by Milo and Fabio
Man this Afrohouse UK track was a true banger at the top of summer. The #gatopatochallenege was an instagram hit for internet dance challenges. I was even about to get in on this dance challenge myself. Milo and Fabio make a lot of dope Afrohouse dance tracks just like Gato Pato, so go check them out if you love that sound like I do!
Track #8 :
“Go Crazy” by Patoranking
Yes to Soca! This I’m sure was a hit at all the Soca fete’s during Carnival season. Patoranking consistently brings the vibes; dabbling in different styles of Afro vibes that is. His past hits like “Available” or “Make Am” sound nothing like “Go Crazy” but you will enjoy them just as much. Put on “Go Crazy” and be ready to get crazy and dance up a sweat when you hear this one. Enjoy!
Track #9 :
“Jealous” by Fireboy DML
The first time I heard this song played was to some really dope dance choreography on Youtube. The beat is so smooth and the lyrics ride it nicely.
Track #10 :
“Don’t Jealous Me” featuring Beyonce, Tekno, Mr. Eazi, and Yemi Alade
Track #11 :
“My Power” by Tierra Whack, Beyoncé, Moonchild Sanelly, Nija, Busiswa, DJ Lag, and Yemi Alade
Both of these songs are off The Lion King: The Gift soundtrack. I have always been such a fan of Beyonce. She takes her music and art to another level consistently. I was very happy to hear that she teamed up with so many amazing Afro-pop artists.
These two tracks are heavy hitters on the album and are very dance-worthy. There are several amazing songs on this album so I say go take a listen to it if you haven’t already.
Track #12 :
“John Cena” by Sho Madjozi
Yoooo! This track is so hype and I love it. I’ve been following Sho Madjozi for a couple years now and I’ve always really enjoyed her jams. South African House music is so popping to me. The dance songs and dance moves coming out of that place are the dopest. Check out more from Sho Madjozi, I promise you’ll be dancing to her music.
Bonus track:
“I Don Blow” by Busta Pop and Zlatan
Busta Pop’s crew always sends me the latest Busta Pop dance tracks, and of the two songs I’ve heard, I’d say they were both very much so danceable. I especially enjoy the first track I heard “Masha Kilo” , which I enjoyed dancing to. Check me out dancing to this song on Youtube. If you like Busta Pop comment your favorite song by him below.
