Did you know that Alcohol is a known carcinogen and is unnatural to the human body?
It’s the 3rd leading cause of preventable death in the United States.
Have you ever wondered why they refer to liquor as “spirits”?
Well, it all made sense to me one day while observing drunk people. It seemed their whole body got took over by another spirit besides their own. They ingested the spirits right out of the liquor bottle.
The first time I saw the logo on a Bacardi rum bottle I thought it confirmed everything. The logo is of a bat, but that wasn’t my first initial thought. The logo looks more like a depiction of the “dark and drunken spirits” that inhabit rum bottles.
Yet, later I came to realize that the logo is of a fruit bat, and I love bats, but my first impression has always stuck with me. The fruit bat was actually a sign of good luck for the Bacardi people. They had bats living in the rafters of their first Bacardi distillery; hints why they made it their logo.
In reality, the term “spirits” comes from the vapors given off during the distillation process.
Anywho, the dark-drunken-alcoholic-spirits has gotten me good a few times in the past.
While drunk, I was aware that I was drunk, but mentally I was still sharp enough to know that. I remember thinking while drunk that I never want to do this to myself again.
I recall a time when I was DJ’ing a private house party and got so drunk that I struggled to get through my entire DJ set. The host of the party kept offering me Hennessy and I didn’t turn him down. I was sipping on it throughout the evening and I didn’t think it would get me drunk. But, it did, and it seemed to hit me all at once. I knew several of the people at the party, but none of them were close trustworthy friends; so basically I was at the party by myself. I left myself open for anything to happen to me, and something almost did.

Drinking while DJ’ing isn’t the smartest thing you can do. For one, it looks quite unprofessional, and two, it can throw you off your A-game.
Sometimes the people who hire you to DJ will offer you free drinks all night long, but be strong, and stay in control. Be mindful of what you are doing.
Many DJs I’ve worked with, especially at club events tend to drink while they’re DJ’ing. I’ve been guilty of joining in with them. It’s fun and it adds to the excitement of the atmosphere, I get it. Yet, that culture is so unhealthy and so unsafe. Especially if you are doing it consistently.
If you’re a female DJ, be even more cautious. If your inhibitions are low you make yourself an easy target for predators looking for prey. We all know this already, but hey a good reminder never hurts.
Emotions are amplified when drinking, and rational thought is thrown out the door.
I’ve seen friends turn into different people while under the influence of alcohol, and then turn right back into themselves the next morning. It is one of the strangest things to witness.
I’m not saying don’t ever drink again, but I do say be responsible for how much you’re drinking and minimize the amount of alcohol you consume.
Try to actually aim for not drinking at all for periods of time. But until then, limit yourself on indulging too much. Have a light drink of choice in mind if you feel the need to partake while you DJ. Ask for light ice and stretch that one drink out, and take smaller sips. Try to limit yourself to just one or two drinks max for the entire time you’re there.
For instance, I like to get a glass of wine or champagne while DJ’ing. Or sometimes I’ll ask for a vodka tonic-water or a whiskey ginger beer. I try to stretch that one drink out so that I am pacing myself.
Remember to not drink on an empty stomach unless you are about to eat. Alcohol will take effect much quicker if you have nothing in your stomach.
Also, take into consideration the other bodily functions that are happening while you drink. Since alcohol is an unnatural substance your body has to work to filter it out, putting unnecessary strain on your system. Your liver, kidneys, and many other organs are directly affected by consistent alcohol consumption. Be mindful of what you are doing.
Be kind to yourself. You’ll thank yourself later.
Speaking from experience, as a female DJ, it is so easy to fall victim to the unsafe realities of inebriation.
In the story I mentioned above, I could have been sexually assaulted. There was an unknown male from the party that came into the room where I was sleeping off my drunkenness. I remember having to scream and push him away from me. I was out of it, but even in my drunkenness, I knew this mystery man was up to no good. Luckily he left the room because of me screaming, but that situation could have gone south.
I also had another experience with someone who I thought was my friend. He spiked my drink. He’ll never admit to it, but I know for a fact that I only had a couple of sips of the drink he made for me. The next thing I remember was short fragmented bits and pieces of the night before coming back to reality in the morning. Things happened during those bits and pieces of my memory that are very hard for me, I was violated, but it happened to me and it can happen to anyone.
So with all that said, I stress using discernment while drinking alcohol. Be aware and be smart about it. Your safety, your health, your job, and your future is at stake, take drinking alcohol seriously.
