What a time to be alive. Face masks are the new fashion, 6 ft distancing in public spaces, and statewide stay-at-home orders for months on end. For a DJ that means no more gigs, no more traveling, no more social gatherings, no more money. I’ve talked to several fellow DJs and event promoters and one thing we have in common is that we are all stuck in this same predicament of No work!
It won’t last forever though, and if anything this should teach us to always be prepared for unforeseen times. Make sure you’re saving money. Take a third of every income check you receive (if you can) and put it aside into savings for times like these. Strive to have at least 3-6 months worth of savings available to you at all times.
I love DJ’ing, but because of the nature of this business (making money on a gig-by-gig basis), you want to make sure not all your eggs are in this one basket. Just my opinion.
Now if you are a producer-DJ and you make money through digital sales of your own original music, that’s awesome! However, most DJ’s I know don’t have it like that. So keep DJ’ing, but be smart about your finances.
