Here’s 8 reasons I love DJ’ing. There’s pros and cons that come with the job, but for me the pros definitely outweigh the cons and these are the reasons why.
1. I love the freedom, the creativity, and the challenge
With DJ’ing you get to find what inspires you musically. Then you get to melt it all together into a big pot of goodness and send it out into the world. I love the challenge behind delivering something new and fresh every set. When people ask me the name of a song because they love it and have never heard it before, that makes me happy.
2. I love watching people have a great time
I get to see the most up-tight people let loss. This is their time to drop all the stress and just dance, mingle, laugh, smile, and enjoy life. People are so stressed these days and I look at myself as the stress reliever. It brings me a since of joy and accomplishment knowing that I am bringing joy to people in the midst of whatever they are dealing with in their life.
3. I love the quick money
Because I am so accustomed to making hundreds of dollars in a matter of hours, I find it almost impossible to go back to a regular full-time job. It almost makes no sense to me. A full-time job making $20 an hour compared to making $100 an hour minimum is a tough pill to swallow.
The deal with DJ’ing is that you have to make these gigs consistent. That’s how you can turn it into your sole money maker. It takes time to get to that level and in the midst of DJ’ing it doesn’t hurt to have other side hustles going on so that you can ensure you’ll always have money coming in. For instance, I teach dance classes, personal train, and recently started a nutrition health coaching business. DJing turns you into an entrepreneur. You have to go out and get the bag, but once you have it secured you can’t wait to go out and get some more.

4. I love working with other unique artists and DJs
I’ve learned so much from working with other talented people. From other DJs to singers, rappers, musicians, graphics artists, poets, etc. I absolutely love it. At gigs we’ll work together, share notes, and have a great time doing so. Recently I did a DJ gig with all female DJs, shout out to my Afrobeats Oakland crew. It was so beautiful because we all brought something different to the table and the energy was so dope. We cheered each other on and helped each other out when there was technical difficulties (there’s always technical difficulties btw). The crowd fed off of our good vibes and they had a blast. Still to this day I have people asking me when we are having the next one. Follow me on instagram @djgurlworld or @k.la.v to keep up with the latest.
5. I love working on cool projects with fun companies
I love working with really fun and dope brands. I’ve gotten a lot free clothing and merchandise from brands. Also, working on really neat initiatives like getting people out to vote, the unveiling of a new tech product, promoting women’s rights, employee appreciation, and working with schools is really cool. I do a variety of events that have lead me to meet some really awesome people as well as lead me to do some really cool things.
6. I love working with music
Preparing for work is basically me putting together song playlists of what I want to mix together at my events. I love that because I love music. It’s one of the few things I could never get sick of. Being able to make money while working with music is total dream job status.
7. I love dancing
“Never trust a DJ who doesn’t dance.” If you can’t feel the music then how would you know what the audience might be feeling when you put on a certain record. It also looks better when you see a DJ up there moving to the beat as they’re mixing records. Dancing is something I’ve always done and will continue to do. Check out some of my numerous dance videos on my Youtube channel. Dancing motivates me to DJ. Remember this quote ‘You don’t stop dancing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop dancing.”
8. I love traveling and DJing in different work settings
Lastly, I’m the type of person that doesn’t really do well with redundancy. I prefer to work on new projects with different people in different places. I’ve done and seen so much that I never imagined I would all while being paid to be there. It’s an amazing feeling.
However, this takes time, if you’re just starting out focus on perfecting your craft and getting yourself out there so you can get comfortable playing in front of people. Don’t rush the process. But once you get there you’ll love this part of the job. Whether its a gig 45 mins away in SF or a gig 3000 miles away in Miami it’s definitely a big part of what I love about DJ’ing.
