Being a Female DJ is

Awesome!

Yes, of course there’s pros and cons that come with the job, but that’s with anything you do.

Take a listen to what I have to say about what it’s like being a woman DJ:

Here’s my thoughts on this…

1.All eyes on Me – Working In the minority

Being a woman DJ is being in the minority. Most DJs are men. Because of this most people are still surprised when they see a female DJ performing.

I get this reaction a lot.

It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but sometimes it feels like all eyes on me… And I better not mess up!

2.Getting Booked solely because I’m a Female DJ

It’s not often spoken, but every once in a while you’ll get one. One person who downplays your skills, and comes to the conclusion that you only get booked because you’re a girl. Completely disregarding all the unknown years of practice and preparation put into your work as a DJ.

3.Dealing with Heavy Equipment

This is definitely a job that you’ll need actual physical strength. There’s no way around it.

Owning a good dolly or cart to transport equipment from vehicle to destination is life changing.

I’ve had instances where I’ve almost thrown my back out of whack trying to lift equipment.

Advice: Do some strength training exercises in your free time to help build and maintain your strength.

Also, check the equipment specifications like weight, height, and length on every piece of equipment you get before buying it. Find out which specs work best for you.

Oh also, people at the events will offer to help you with your equipment, but my advice is don’t go into any gig expecting someone there to help you. You need to be able to do it on your own.

What if someone stubs their toe badly on a piece of your equipment they were helping you load in? You don’t want that legal drama.

4.Jealous Boyfriends (significant others)

Not gonna lie, relationships can be kinda challenging as a female DJ.

Especially, if your relationship is not emotionally stable and secure.

As a female DJ you are naturally going to be out working around a lot of other DJs and promoters and event-goers that may find you attractive and interesting.

They’ll approach you, and inquire, even though you’re completely not interested.

In many cases, this may make your boo-thang a little jealous.

Advice: Make sure you’re in an honest relationship that you want to be in, and you have a partner that trusts you, and you trust back. It’s the only way it’s gonna work.

5.Professional Work Relationships

It’s important that you set boundaries when working with other DJ, promoters, event planners, and event goers.

You want to have fun and be personable with everyone at your events, but when the party is over I advice that you do not continue the party with any of these people unless the situation is seriously calling for that.

I say this because it’s best not to blur the lines when it comes to your business, and pleasure. You want people to respect you so that they’ll want to work with you again.

I’m speaking from experience. 😉
